Film Series at Balfour's Lodge Highlighted Seniors Enjoy Movie, Talk
Louisville Times Oct. 13-19, 2004
Balfour residents and staff got a lesson in film history on Thursday, Oct. 7, during a showing of "Sullivan's Travels," the inaugural film in the Lodge at Balfour film series.
The kick-off event featured a talk by Colorado Public Radio film critic Howie Movshovitz.
Although Thursday is the only time Movshovitz is expected to speak during the film series, Balfour staff said he was key in selecting the movies.
"Howie recommended all of the movies in the film series," Balfour activities director Lisa Helms said. "He wanted ones that were well done, ones that maybe everyone hadn't seen."
Helms said the fact that the seniors mostly comprised the audience was taken into account as well.
"I think he did pick these movies because they would have some appeal to residents," Helms said.
Although the series takes place at the Lodge at Balfour independent living facility, it is open to the public.
"Honestly, this was originally kind of a marketing event," Helms said. "We have a theater facility that people can come in to use for free or for little cost and we wanted people to see it."
The afternoon started with a lecture about "Sullivan's Travels" by Movshovitz. He advised the audience about things to look out for during the film.
After the movie, he opened the floor to a discussion of movies and history.
"It was great to hear about the history of older movies," said Nicole DeJarnatt, who works for Balfour's public relations firm, Holloway and Hyde Communications.
"Sullivan's Travels" brought back memories of the great depression for many residents, Helms said.
One resident told a story about how local children would throw rocks at trains, in order to taunt workers on the train to throw back lumps of coal.
Eventually, the woman said, railroad workers figured out the children just wanted to get coal.
"They just loved it," Helms said of the residents. "They were like, 'When is Howie coming back?'"
